What makes a good laundry basket?
A laundry basket needs to be practical, but that doesn't mean it has to look ordinary.
When choosing a laundry basket, consider:
Size and capacity – Choose a basket that can comfortably hold the amount of laundry your household produces.
Handles – Handles can make it easier to carry laundry from a bedroom or bathroom to the washing machine.
Shape – Tall baskets can work well in smaller spaces, while wider baskets can be useful for larger loads.
Lid or open design – A lidded basket can keep laundry neatly contained, while an open basket makes it easy to add and remove clothes.
Material – Natural fibres such as sisal and grass give baskets their own texture and character. Some of our Senegalese designs also incorporate recycled materials.
Style – Your laundry basket doesn't have to be hidden away. A colourful handmade basket can become part of your room's décor.
Our Handmade African Laundry Baskets
Our collection brings together baskets made by artisans in different parts of Africa. The materials, weaving techniques and designs vary according to where each basket is made.
Senegalese Woven Laundry Baskets
Our colourful Senegalese laundry baskets are woven using traditional techniques and materials including sweetgrass/typha grass and, for some designs, recycled plastic prayer mats.
Our Ali Baba-style laundry baskets feature colourful woven designs and fitted lids, making them particularly useful when you want to keep laundry neatly contained.
They can also be used beyond the laundry room for storing blankets, toys, towels and other household items.
Kenyan Sisal Laundry Baskets
Our Kenyan sisal baskets are handwoven using sisal, a strong natural plant fibre grown in Kenya.
The baskets are available in different colours and designs, with the natural variations that you would expect from handmade products.
As well as laundry, Kenyan sisal baskets can be used for toys, shoes, throws, cushions, blankets and general household storage.
How are handmade laundry baskets made?
The exact process varies according to the basket, the materials used and the community where it is made.
For many of our baskets, the process begins with preparing and sorting the natural fibres or other weaving materials. Skilled artisans then weave the materials by hand, gradually building the shape of the basket.
The basket is shaped and finished carefully, with handles, lids or other details added where appropriate.
Handweaving takes time and skill. Small differences in colour, texture, shape and size are therefore a natural characteristic of our handmade baskets rather than a defect.
Some of our Senegalese baskets also incorporate recycled plastic materials, giving materials that might otherwise be discarded a new purpose.
More than a laundry basket: practical storage for your home
One of the things we love about woven baskets is their versatility.
Once you've finished using a basket for laundry, it can have many other uses around the home.
🧺 Laundry
Keep clothes, towels and bedding together until wash day.
🧸 Children's rooms
Use larger baskets to collect toys, soft toys, books or clothes.
🛋️ Living rooms
Store blankets, throws and cushions while keeping them within easy reach.
👟 Hallways
Use baskets for shoes, slippers, hats, scarves and everyday accessories.
🛏️ Bedrooms
Keep spare blankets, bed linen and clothing organised.
🌿 Around the home
Depending on the design, our baskets can also be used as storage baskets, shoppers, planters or decorative pieces.
Why buy a handmade laundry basket from The Bam's Art Shop?
At The Bam's Art Shop, we believe that buying a basket should also connect you with the craftsmanship and people behind it.
We work with artisan partners in different African countries, including Ghana, Kenya and Senegal, and aim to build long-term, fair relationships with the communities we work with.
Many of our baskets are individually handwoven, meaning that every basket has its own character. Rather than being perfectly identical, handmade baskets can have subtle differences in colour, shape and texture.
We also choose products that combine traditional craftsmanship with designs that work in contemporary homes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are your laundry baskets handmade?
Yes. Many of our laundry baskets are individually handwoven by skilled artisans. The exact materials and weaving techniques vary according to the basket and where it is made.
Where are your laundry baskets made?
Our collection includes handmade baskets from different African countries, including Senegal and Kenya.
What materials are your laundry baskets made from?
This depends on the design. Our collection includes natural fibres such as sisal and grass-based materials. Some Senegalese designs also incorporate recycled plastic materials.
Please check the individual product description for the exact materials used in each basket.
Are African laundry baskets sustainable?
Many of our baskets are made using natural plant fibres and traditional handweaving techniques, while some designs incorporate recycled materials.
We prefer to describe the specific materials and production methods of each basket rather than make a blanket sustainability claim about every product.
What is the difference between a sisal and a grass laundry basket?
Sisal is a strong natural plant fibre and is commonly used by our artisan partners in Kenya. Our Senegalese baskets can use grass-based materials and, in some designs, recycled plastic materials.
The texture, appearance and construction therefore vary between baskets.
Can I use a laundry basket for things other than laundry?
Absolutely. Many of our baskets are multifunctional and can be used for blankets, towels, toys, shoes, throws, cushions and general household storage.
Check the individual product description for recommended uses.
Do your laundry baskets have lids?
Some do and some don't. Our Ali Baba-style Senegalese laundry baskets, for example, feature fitted lids. Please check the individual product details for each design.
How do I care for a woven laundry basket?
Care instructions vary according to the materials used. In general, avoid soaking natural-fibre baskets and clean them gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Always follow the care instructions provided with your specific basket.
Will my handmade basket look exactly like the photograph?
Not necessarily. Because our baskets are handmade, there may be small variations in colour, shape, texture and dimensions between individual pieces. These differences are part of the character of a handmade product.
Where can I buy handmade African laundry baskets in the UK?
You can shop our collection of handmade laundry baskets online at The Bam's Art Shop, with different designs and materials available from our artisan partners in Africa.
